When Should You Throw Out Your Makeup?

We’re all guilty of having that one makeup item we just can’t bear to part with! But, cosmetics do have an expiration date for a reason, and your favourite products could be the cause of your acne or allergies. If you can’t remember when you purchased your products (because it’s been that long), it’s time to clean out your much-loved makeup kit.

Use these guidelines to figure out when it’s time to let your makeup go.

Liquid Foundation

Your breakouts could be caused by an expired foundation. You should be able to get a good 6 – 8 months out of your base, however, if your liquid becomes lumpy, causes redness or gets really thick, toss it! This could be the main cause of your acne or sensitivity.

On the hunt for a fresh new foundation? Give Hannon’s Full Coverage Foundation, R252, a go. It camouflages redness, hides blemishes and has enough staying power to last you the whole day.

Blush can last you up to a year if you store it correctly. Keep it in a cool, dry place to prevent colour loss as well as excess moisture which can cause bacteria to grow. Blushes tend to carry loads of bacteria, especially if you don’t wash your blush brush very often.

Give yourself a rosy glow that any blushing bride would be jealous of with Hannon’s Peachy Blusher, R230. The highly pigmented colour payoff will add warmth and youth to any skin tone. Dab it on the apples of your cheeks and even the eyelids for a peachier appearance.

Beauty gurus throw their mascara away after 3 months. This is because our eyelashes already carry bacteria, which gets transferred from our eye to our mascara wand. Most people use theirs until they get dry or super clumpy, but it’s best to let go before you put yourself at risk of eye infections – especially if you share your mascara with all the gals.

Give Hannon’s Superlash Mascara, R240, a go. Its unique waterproof and smudge-proof formula makes it ideal for sensitive eyes. It coats every lash evenly and dries quickly in a “plastic-like” film that resembles the illusion of false lashes.

Eye Shadow

Powdered eyeshadow can last for up to 2 years! If your eyes are sensitive or you’re afraid of infection, you might want to get a few new shadows every 6 months. You’ll know your shadow is on its way out when the texture starts to break and become flaky.

Try Hannon’s Day To Night Eyeshadow, R230, which will take you from desk to dinner in no time!

The risk of bacteria getting into your lipstick is low because lipstick doesn’t contain water, however, the essential oils and vitamins in your favourite lippie do start to break down after a year.

It’s recommended that you replace lipstick or gloss every 2 years.
Uniquely blended with equal quantities of warm and cool pigments – similar to the colour pigments in our skin – make the Hannon Lipsticks, R175, ideal for anyone.
