Avon was founded in 1886 by David H. McConnell, then known as the California Perfume Company. From the onset of the company, Avon has been about supporting women and helping them grow. McConnell recognised that women were struggling financially and would be able to market his products passionately. Knowing this, he recruited the first Avon Sales Representative, Mrs. P.F.E. Albee. Doing this kicked off a long tradition of providing women with an earning opportunity! More than that, Avon has also always fostered a supportive, family environment.
“Avon is a family business; everyone gets involved, even if they don’t know it. They use the products and, without thinking, recommend the products. Before they know it, they are our Representatives. Avon really looks after us!”- Denise Zwiers.
Avon now has over 6 million Representatives worldwide. Helping women all over the world develop skills and gain financial security. In addition to their direct selling programme, Avon is also involved with various philanthropic initiatives. In South Africa, they have donated over R20 million towards breast cancer awareness and education, and over R7 million in helping end domestic violence against women.
Avon’s roots have always been founded in fostering a supportive environment for women. For the past 125 years the company has continued to grow and expand its reach. In South Africa, it has certainly made an impact and continues to help women daily, maintaining its long standing tradition of being a company for women!
